A Credo without Belief
by N Filbert
I Tried to Write a Credo and Came Up With What I Love
Absorbency:
the feeling that you’ve been here before
and know just what to do
finessing the details
encompassed, encompassing
Vitality:
the feeling that the plug is in, the flow secure
and there’s plenty of slack in the cord
Friendship:
the feeling that they know you
care about what they know
and even enjoy
adjusting themselves to the truth
Marriage:
the feeling that in the mirror
is a gracious form more beautiful than your own
branding you each step of the journey
Offspring:
the feeling you’ve been part of something
superior to gods in its reality
and anguish and joy
Living:
the feeling that things happen
that stitch you together
and tear you apart
and the fabric holds
Language:
the feeling that the present is at hand
just out of your reach
that maybe you might touch it
move it a little
Art:
the feeling that you’re part of a faith,
a hope, a religion, cosmology
of actual things
larger than, yet including
yourself
Encounter:
the feeling that the clothes
that fit you the best,
most worn to your body -
it’s needs and it’s uses,
are always brand new
